Hi! Gimana liburannya kemarin? Menyenangkan? Lebaran masih dapat THR? Wkwkwk- i’m sorry i didn’t mean to... erm- sorry.

Well, after taunting fans all summer with talk of new music, the boys have FINALLY released a new song, “She’s Kinda Hot”, yang bisa jadi petunjuk mengenai warna musik dan konsep untuk upcoming album mereka yang memang tengah dalam proses. Beberapa hari sebelum rilis, anak-anak (sorry gue manggil mereka anak-anak, gamungkin mas-mas. Gaenak didenger), khususnya Ash bikin kita pada jengah banget dengan teori mengenai ‘kira-kira ini lagunya kayak apa’. Banyak yang bilang kalau “She’s Kinda Hot” akan terdengar atau kurang lebih bakal mirip “She Looks So Perfect”. However, it was far from that. Single baru 5 Seconds of Summer ini, menurut gue, sama sekali beda dengan keseluruhan lagu di album debut mereka sebelumnya.

The chorus of the song is somehow sounded like Good Charlotte’s or maybe SUM 41’s. Gue gaheran sebenarnya kalo ada yang bilang lagu ini jadi kedengeran kayak punya Good Charlotte, gue pun berpendapat demikian. Usut punya usut, Madden Brothers emang jadi co-writer lagu ini, dan guitar riff di bagian chorus pun sumbangan dari buah pikiran Benji Madden. The wicked guitar solo right before the two minute mark made me think back to some early 2000s bands and the rest of the pop punk scene (Michael describes as a “desert cowboy ” vibe in his and Ashton’s interview with Rolling Stone), i was like going back to my emo days, back then- masa SMP. Lagu ini tadinya mau dinyanyiin solo sm Ash, but later the band decide that they all should contribute to the vocals.

Sekilas vokal lagu ini memang terkesan nyeleneh, major fans describe this song as a mischievous riot of an anthem - all crunchy guitars, high octane drums and a massive chorus. Fine, gue juga berpendapat sama. Untuk urusan lirik “She’s Kinda Hot” ga punya hubungan ke lagu “She Looks So Perfect” sama sekali atau “Try Hard” (dugaan awal gue). If you read deeper into the lyrics it’s like an anthem for misfit kids, which is like our way of starting a rebellion. Dengan lirik ‘we’re alright though’ yang sering diulang menggambarkan situasi, yang Michael deskripsikan sebagai The New Broken Scene. I mean the song is like the feeling you get when you’re really stressed and things aren’t going the way you want things to go, but you know you’ll be okay.

Hal diataslah yang gue sayangkan, judul lagunya misleading banget. Bahkan tadinya gue ogah beli lagu ini (gara-gara judulnya terlalu- gitu haha) gue pikir bakal ga jauh beda kayak “Try Hard” dari segi lirik, gue masih ga habis pikir apa yang bikin mereka menjatuhkan pilihan pada ‘She’s Kinda Hot’ sebagai title track? Kenapa ga ‘The Riot’ atau ‘Kids Are Alright’? hahahaha-_- Tapi ya itu, ke-misleading-an judul lagu ini mengajarkan kita bahwa jangan maen judge lagu dari title track, aja.

Opini gue “She’s Kinda Hot” is a proof that the boys can really redefine ‘punk-rock’, this is to say despite a lot of critics mocking their sound. Hey, it’s fun and it’s got catchy guitar riffs! There ain’t nothing wrong with a little party! The listener might be attracted by the title to figure out what kind of song this is, but once they get a taste of the lyrics and the heavy, anthem-like beat, they won’t press the pause button.
